Rembrandt Retired

Sir Rembrandt, the 2004 Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up, has been retired.

Connections of the popular 12-year-old chose to call it a day after a third consecutive poor show at Newbury on Saturday.

Victor Dartnall´s chaser was off the bridle some way from home in the National Britannia Veterans´ Handicap Chase and trailed home a distant seventh.

Dartnall told the Racing Post: "He didn´t really enjoy himself and is not the same horse we saw earlier in the season.

"The owner is very keen to retire him now and I fully support him."

Sir Rembrandt made a winning debut for Dartnall at Cheltenham in November, having previously been under the tutelage of Robert Alner.

The Alan Hordle-owned stayer accrued prize-money of nearly £318,000 and won six races, two of which at Graded level.
