Septimus may swerve Gold Cup

Dual Ascot Gold Cup winner Yeats could have the stage kept clear for a third victory with stablemate and market rival Septimus possibly missing the showpiece event.

Yeats will be bidding to emulate Sagaro by landing a hat-trick of wins, but would face a potential stumbling block in Septimus, who marked himself out as one to follow over staying trips in last summer´s Lonsdale and Doncaster Cups.

Trainer Aidan O´Brien said: "Septimus was half pencilled in for a two-mile race at York next week, but I think Honolulu will run there instead.

"Septimus started off last year in the Coronation Cup (when second) and could go back there, but that is only a possibility.

"Yeats was not quite as good at Ascot last year with two runs before so he might go straight there now. He and Septimus are owned by a slightly different combination of people so we might give him the chance of a third Gold Cup and Septimus could go for the Hardwicke."

However, O´Brien ruled Irish Derby winner Solider of Fortune out of an appearance at Chester this week, while at the same time reporting Prix Ganay winner Duke Of Marmalade on target for his next assignment.

He said: "Soldier Of Fortune is entered at Chester but isn´t going to run. He will hopefully go away for a piece of work and then head to the Coronation Cup.

"Duke Of Marmalade´s plan was always to start in France and the pins in his legs were troubling him all of last year.

"He has worked well this spring, won nicely in France and will come back for the Tattersalls Gold Cup on Guineas weekend (at the Curragh)."

Peeping Fawn, brilliant winner of the Irish Oaks and four time Group One heroine, will be another making a belated start to 2008.

"Peeping Fawn is in good form and has had a long break. She won´t start back before the Irish Derby weekend, and the Pretty Polly could be a possibility for her," O´Brien added.
