Sergeant On The March To Ascot

Sergeant Cecil, arguably the most popular stayer in training, is set to drop back in trip for the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

The popular gelding is more used to plying his trade at distances of two miles and beyond, but with only eight horses confirmed for the midsummer highlight, connections have been tempted to try their luck.

'It's a speculative entry, but if you're not in, you can't win,' was the simple assessment of trainer Rod Millman.

'I just hope the meeting is on with all this weather that is about. He likes fast ground, but the ground being soft is going to make it a stamina test, and anything that doesn't quite get a mile and a half is going to struggle.

'I'm very pleased with him. He just pulled a bit too hard last time (in the Gold Cup) and didn't settle. He was always a bit keen.

'Ascot probably isn't his course, but it's a bit different with just eight runners.

'If all the proper horses had stayed in we'd probably be going to Goodwood (for the Goodwood Cup). He'll have an entry at Goodwood, but I'd say he'll only run there if Ascot is off,' he told At The Races.
