Smullen cautioned over riding at Ballinrobe The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Akinola, trained by Seamus Fahey and ridden by P.J Smullen in this race. Evidence was heard from the trainer and rider concerned. In his evidence, P.J Smullen said that his instructions were to settle the horse in the best position given its poor draw and to do his best from there. He added that he jumped slowly away and then couldn?t go the pace early. He stated he was trapped behind a wall of horses down the back straight and he didn?t have an opportunity to get into the race until it was almost over. He admitted that from the turn home he could have been more vigorous in his riding. Seamus Fahey confirmed the instructions and said he was satisfied with the ride considering the poor draw and his difficulty in going the early pace. He concurred with P.J Smullen that he could have been more vigorous from the turn home. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Akinola at the request of the Stewards and was found to be Post Race Normal. Having considered all the evidence, and having viewed a video of the race the Stewards noted the explanations offered however P J Smullen was cautioned to be seen to be making more effort in future.
