St Steven wins in Japan

St Steven, owned and trained by John Wheeler, defeated Gokai by a length and a half to win the Nakayama Grand Jump over two miles five furlongs in Japan today.

Cenkos, trained by Paul Nicholls, fared best of the three British raiders finishing fifth.

The eight-year-old gelding, ridden by Timmy Murphy, was beaten just under 16 lengths by the Australian-trained winner.

Banker Count, trained by Venetia Williams and ridden by Norman Williamson, finished 10th while Martin Pipe`s runner Exit Swinger was last of the 15 starters. The other intended runner Rand was withdrawn.

St Steven had Gokai a length and a half back in second with Fusaichi Gold a further seven lengths away third and Minamino Gorgeous a nose back in fourth. All the placed horses are trained in Japan.
