Stewards exonerate O´Farrell over unfortunate Sligo runner-up ride James O´Farrell was exonerated by the Stewards at Sligo this evening following a controversial ride on runner-up Immaculate Rose in the New Ballisodare Centre Opportunity Maiden Hurdle. O´Farrell appeared to give the runner-up a tender ride on the run-in and was headed close home by neck winner Cybersnow. The Stewards subsequently interviewed O´Farrell concerning his riding in the closing stages of the race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned who stated that from the last hurdle to the winning post that he did not stop riding and slapped his mount on the shoulder and rode hands and heels. He added that in his opinion his mount was at full stretch and shortened her stride near the finish and there was nothing to be gained by using the whip. He confirmed that he was fully aware of the challenger but considered that the winner finished strongly under a very vigorous ride. Having viewed the video, considered the evidence and also the report of the Turf Club Veterinary Officer which stated that the filly was lame post race the Stewards took no further action. O´Farrell made a big impression as an amateur rider in Ireland before moving to ride in England last season, where he recorded 11 winners, five for his employer with Howard Johnson.
