Tempera Tragedy

Godolphin`s Kentucky Oaks hope Tempera has had to be put down after she developed colic and then laminitis.

The Breeders` Cup Juvenile Fillies winner was sent to the Hagyard-Davidson-McGee Veterinary Clinic in Lexington with an 'elevated temperature' on Friday.

Unfortunately her condition deteriorated rapidly on Sunday and nothing could be done to save her.

Tom Albetrani, assistant trainer to Saeed bin Suroor said: 'We are all pretty much in a state of shock after the death of Tempera. We took all the precautions we could and for something like this to happen is a nightmare.

'Sadly she took ill with colic and then developed laminitis and her condition worsened over the weekend.

'She was taken to an equine clinic in Lexington where early today they had no alternative but to put her down.'

Tempera was campaigned in America last season and she took three races for trainer Eoin Harty, including the Grade Two Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar as well as her Breeders` Cup triumph.

She also finished third to leading Kentucky Oaks hope Habibti in the Grade One Del Mar Debutante Stakes.

Tempera was then second in the UAE 1000 Guineas at Nad Al Sheba behind Infinite Spirit then finished runner-up to fellow Oaks hope Imperial Gesture in a five-runner prestige race at the same track.

She was due to tackle Friday`s Oaks at Churchill Downs, but Godolphin`s sole representative will now be Imperial Gesture. -PA
