Two horses killed on first day of Aintree

Two horses were killed on the opening day of the three-day Grand National meeting at Aintree today, prompting calls from an animal rights pressure group for organisers to be prosecuted.

One of the horses broke his neck and the other a shoulder.

The deaths brought the number killed at the National meeting since 1997 to 25, the group Animal Aid said.

A statement said: 'Animal Aid laments the needless loss of two more magnificent animals at Aintree and calls for the organisers to be prosecuted under the 1911 Protection of Animals Act, which makes it an offence to subject animals to unnecessary suffering.'

Animal Aid said they would be staging a large-scale demonstration at Saturday`s big race and before then at dozens of betting shops throughout the country.
