WILLIAMSON HAPPY WITH MOSS

Norman Williamson today expressed surprise at the gamble on his mount Mely Moss for Saturday week`s Martell Grand National.

But the jockey is very happy with the condition of last year`s runner-up and 'wouldn`t swap him'.

Mely Moss, trained by Charlie Egerton, has been all the rage in recent betting on the Aintree showpiece and is 6-1 market leader with Victor Chandler.

Williamson said in his Daily Express column: 'He did a great bit of work on Saturday morning but I can`t help feeling his status is as much to do with the absence of Irish horses from the field and the fact that we have had so little racing to promote the contenders.

'6-1 favourite for the National? They went 4-1 the field in the handicap chase I won at Newbury on Saturday.'

Though Mely Moss has not run since chasing home Papillon nearly 12 months ago, he is reckoned spot-on for another tilt at the world`s most famous chase with his workout last Saturday.

'I won`t tell you the name of thehorse he worked with because the owner wouldn`t like to know that his horse was kicked out of the way by a Grand National horse but Mely Moss did work well,' Williamson said.

'He really enjoyed himself and was as happy at the end of the gallop as he was at the start.

'He seems very fit, as he should be so close to the race, and although it is a cliche I wouldn`t swap him.'
