Winning venture for Woods

Wolf Venture ended a spell of near misses for his trainer Sean Woods when winning the first race at Lingfield today.

Apprentice Chris Catlin, partnering his 25th winner of the year, was seen to good effect, forcing his mount past Parker in the final 50 yards to land the Steve Wood Memorial Handicap by half a length.

'It was a great ride by the kid, and I wouldn`t mind having a few quid on him for the apprentice championship,' said Woods`s travelling head lad Andy Shaw.

'The boss will be pleased with this. We can`t get a winner on grass to save our lives but we`re doing well on the all-weather.

'The horses are running well and we`re having plenty of seconds and third, but they`re just not getting the rub of the green.'

Jimmy Fortune was delayed in traffic between London and Lingfield and was forced to forgo his ride on Bishopstone Man.

Fortune was at the Jockey Club headquarters where his appeal against a seven-day suspension was turned down by the disciplinary committee.

Fortune`s ban comes into effect on Saturday and sees him sit out the influential Dante meeting at York next week.

Bishopstone Man, who finished ninth, was partnered by Michael Tebbutt.
