Amateur McManus in critical condition following fall at Ballingarry point to point.

Amateur jockey Shaun McManus is in a critical condition in the National Spinal Unit following a fall at Ballingarry point to point last Sunday.

McManus was riding Big Scottie in division 1 of the 5&6yo maiden when his mount was brought down at the third fence.

The 21yo rider from Moate, Co Westmeath, was removed to Nenagh hospital before being transferred to the National Spinal Unit in Dublin where he is in intensive care.

Turf Club Medical Officer Dr Walter Halley described his condition as 'a serious neck injury in which he fractured two vertebraes. He spent a long time in theatre on Monday morning. He is concious and on a respirator but it is too early to know the extent of his spinal inuries.'

He added 'the McManus family wish to thank the two doctors and staff on duty at the point to point and also want to praise the work of the Order of Malta who handled the situation superbly well.'
