Barton returns at Wetherby

High class hurdler Barton will have just four rivals to beat as he makes his chasing debut at Wetherby tomorrow.

The eight-year-old has been declared by trainer Tim Easterby for the Betfair.com Novices` Chase over two miles.

The gelding, a course winner, was fourth behind Landing Light in the Coral Eurobet Championship Hurdle at Sandown in April, having won the Grade One Martell Aintree Hurdle in impressive style previously.

The four who will take on Barton are Historg (trained by Ferdy Murphy), Lord North, Machete Man (both Paul Webber), and October Mist (Mary Reveley).

On the same card racing`s most popular loser, Quixall Crossett, bids to break his duck at the 102nd attempt when he lines up for the Tetley`s Bitter Novices` Chase over three miles and a furlong.

The 16-year-old gelding, trained by Ted Caine, was sixth on this course in his most recent outing - in a race named in his honour.

There are just 54 declared runners for the six races at Wetherby tomorrow.

Easterby said of Barton today: 'He`s grand. We`ll see how it goes. He is in good form.'

He added that he was hoping for a good run from the gelding following his summer break and would see how tomorrow went before making further plans.
