Bary takes fourth French Derby

Sulamani, trained by Pascal Bary and ridden by Thierry Thulliez, upset hot favourite Act One to win the 1.1 million euro Prix du Jockey-Club, French Derby, today.

An outsider at 20-1 Sulamani, running in the Niarchos family colours, was supplying Bary with his fourth success in the race.

Act One, trained by Jonathan Pease and 10-11 favourite, took second, a length and a half away, with British challenger Simeon five lengths back in third.

Bary`s previous winners of France`s premier classic were Dream Well, Celtic Arms and Ragmar.

Sulamani is bred in the pink, as his sire is Hernando, the brilliant winner of this race in 1993.

'This horse is exceptional, he`s got a fine turn of foot and stays really well,' said Bary.

An emotional Thulliez believed his mount`s previous knowledge of the mile and a half course contributed to the triumph.

'He won his prep race over the same track. We always had confidence in him.'

Thulliez had Sulamani anchored at the back of the field as Temple Of Artemis, the pacemaker for Aidan O`Brien`s three runners, went smartly into the lead.

Turning for home Simeon, a late supplementary entry, took over at the helm but Act One was tracking his every move and went for broke down the straight.

But behind lurked Thulliez whose mount was travelling ominously well, getting up to and passing the grey inside the final 200 metres.
