BRITISH POINT-TO-POINTS CANCELLED

Point-to-point racing in Britain will not resume until January next year following today`s decision to abandon all remaining fixtures this season.

The sport had been suspended in response to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease and the Jockey Club Point-to-Point Liaison Committee has now unanimously decided to cancel all remaining meetings until the end of the campaign on June 16th.

The committee heard advice from the Jockey Club`s chief veterinary advisor Dr Peter Webbon at today`s meeting.

It decided that point-to-point venues could not meet the stringent disinfection procedures being used under Rules, nor could they police those practices for the sport`s participants and racegoers.

The committee`s chairman Mark Davies said: 'We looked at a number of options and the decision to cancel was taken with great regret.

'However, given the close links between farming, hunting and point-to-pointing, in order for the season to resume it was essential that point-to-pointing could meet the same level of precautions that are in place for racing under Rules.

'Unfortunately the nature of our sport makes that impossible and furthermore it is clear that those precautions will be in place for some considerable time.'
