Cecil loses Wellbeing

Henry Cecil, who by his own high standards endured a below-par season last year, has been dealt a further blow with the news today that Wellbeing is to be transferred to France.

The five-year-old son of Sadler`s Wells, owned by the Plantation Stud, is to continue his career in the care of Pascal Bary.

Wellbeing finished fifth in the 2000 Vodafone Derby but only ran three times last term, although he was only beaten a short-head second to Mutafaweq in the Coronation Cup at Epsom.

He has not been seen out since disappointing behind stablemate Sandmason in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

Leslie Harrison, manager of Plantation Stud, denied that the move had anything to do with the trainer`s recent downturn in fortunes.

'Absolutely not. We think that in France he will get the ground he so obviously needs, which he will not get in Britain,' he told the Racing Post.

'Epsom and Ascot stumped him up - he was badly jarred after Ascot, having had a hard race at Epsom, and it was a bit too much.'
