Demophilos to join Leger field

Demophilos is to be supplemented tomorrow at a cost of Stg£20,000 for the 225th Rothmans Royals St Leger, it has been revealed.

'He will be supplemented and Richard Quinn rides,' a spokesman for the Amanda Perrett stable confirmed today.

The three-year-old colt, owned by Athos Christodoulou, has been placed in two recognised St Leger trials to earn his place in the line-up at Doncaster a week tomorrow.

The progressive son of Dr Devious was only beaten a neck by Alexius in the Gordon Stakes and was then a highly-creditable third to Milan in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York.

Both his conquerors are among the 5-2 co-favourites with Ladbrokes for the world`s oldest Classic while Demophilos is 12-1.

He will be Mrs Perrett`s first Leger runner since she took over the running of the Coombelands stables in Pulborough from her father Guy Harwood in 1996.

He failed to saddle the winner but went close in 1984 when Alphabatim was third to Commanche Run and a year later with Phardante, who was second to the Triple Crown winning filly Oh So Sharp.

Quinn will be seeking his third Leger triumph after Millenary 12 months ago and Snurge in 1990 from nine attempts.
