Dettori and Hills delay Aussie trip

Frankie Dettori and Richard Hills have delayed their departure for Australia, where they are due to ride for Godolphin in next Tuesday`s Tooheys New Melbourne Cup.

Both jockeys will now set off on Friday night after racing at Newmarket where Dettori is committed to ride for Godolphin while Hills has mounts for Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum.

The delay means that Frankie will miss a scheduled ride on board recent Moonee Valley winner La Bella Darma in the Group One Mackinnon Stakes for local trainer Graeme Rogerson.

Dettori`s agent Ray Cochrane today confirmed the delay, saying: 'They both have commitments with their retainers and will leave for Australia immediately after Newmarket`s meeting on Friday.'

When the jockeys do eventually arrive they will sit down and discuss their riding plans with trainer Saeed bin Suroor who will be supervising the final stages of the preparation of Marienbard and Give The Slip.

On yet another cold and wet Melbourne morning the two contenders walked around their quarantine compound at Sandown racecourse with British raider Persian Punch, having two canters round the track and completing nine furlongs in total.

Meanwhile, Frenchman Olivier Peslier is set to ride Caitano, Germany`s hope in Tuesday`s big race. The seven-year-old is going up in trip after finishing seventh of the eight runners to Northerly in last Saturday`s Carlton Draught Cox Plate.

Connections are expecting a better performance over Tuesday`s two-mile trip than the 10 furlongs of Saturday`s race.

The ride on Caitano became available when US star Kent Desormeaux was forced to abandon plans to ride the horse due to a family illness.

Last weekend, Peslier rode Banks Hill to victory in the Breeders` Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Belmont Park, New York.
