Dettori takes International title

Frankie Dettori won the International Jockeys` Championship by the narrowest of margins at Happy Valley today.

Representing the United Arab Emirates and successful in a similar contest in Mauritius last weekend, Dettori scored 16 points to pip Australian Damien Oliver by one point. French rider Oliver Peslier was a further point away in third.

Dettori got the best possible start with victory in the first of the three races on short-priced favourite Noble Boy.

He finished third in the other two legs on Super Splendid and Kindred Spirits.

Dettori said: 'It was a good thing I was on the hot favourite because you need at least one winner.

'But it was all down to luck and the real business starts on Sunday.'
