Dominica too speedy for Cornwallis rivals

Marcus Tregoning unveiled a new star at Ascot`s final Flat meeting for the second year running today as Dominica floored a gamble in the Willmott Dixon Cornwallis Stakes.

Twelve months after Nayef leapt to Classic favouritism following victory in the only race possible before a bomb scare, his younger stable-companion staked her claim for top sprint honours with a scintillating victory in the Group Three five-furlong test.

The juvenile started at 12-1 after winning a maiden at lowly Musselburgh on her previous start but took the big step up in class in her stride, showing fine speed to lead throughout and come home a length and three-quarters clear of well-backed 7-4 favourite Berk The Jerk.

'We went to Musselburgh to make her a winner and there weren`t many five-furlong races around at the time, and she won really well,' Tregoning said.

'She`s a late foal and needed a bit of time so we gave her a bit of time. But since day one, from the first day we worked her, she has looked pretty useful and she won this very easily. We hope she will be a better horse next year.'

Dancing Mystery showed similar pace to land a first win of the season at the 14th attempt in the Tote Exacta Stakes, scoring by a length and a quarter from Guinea Hunter, and will make a quick reappearance at Newmarket next Saturday in a bid to double his tally.

Head In The Clouds gave John Dunlop his fourth win in the Group Three Princess Royal Willmott Dixon Stakes in 13 years with a pillar-to-post success.

Abbajabba gave Chris Fairhurst his biggest success in the Stg#30,000 Coral Eurobet Sprint Trophy at York today.

Marcus Tregoning, who had earlier won the Group Three Cornwallis Stakes at Ascot with Dominica, celebrated by taking his score for the season to 50 with Prism in the Listed Newton Fund Managers Rockingham Stakes.
