Double Delight For Chapple-Hyam

Peter Chapple-Hyam continued his domination of the 2007 Flat season with a double on day one of Glorious Goodwood.

By far the star performance of his brace was Tariq, whose star remains in the ascendancy following the Group Two Betfair Cup.

The Jersey Stakes winner, a 7-2 shot here, tested rider Kerrin McEvoy's mettle as approaching the home straight Dunelight looked to have slipped the field.

But although he had been slowly away, Tariq picked up well to oblige readily from 5-2 favourite Asset, opening up a length and a quarter gap by the line.

'His work has been very good lately and I was very confident, but I was slightly worried about the track,' said the Derby-winning trainer.

'I've now got him and Dutch Art and they are my two favourite horses, and one day they will have to clash.

'I'd love to go for the Queen Elizabeth II with him now or even the Haydock race (Sprint Cup), but wherever he goes it will be for a Group One next.'

Chapple-Hyam also took the Tatler Summer Season EBF Maiden Stakes through Shallal (4-1 co-favourite), who finished best under Jimmy Fortune.

The winner was home-bred by Dubai businessman Zaid Galadari, who was represented by his racing manager Andrew Sime.

Sime said: 'Jimmy was delighted with the horse. I'll speak to Peter and the owner, but we'll probably go for a Listed race next.'

Paul Roy's first day as chairman of the all-new British Horseracing Authority got off to a flying start through his part-ownership of Betfair Molecomb Stakes winner Fleeting Spirit.

The Jeremy Noseda-trained 8-1 shot had a fine tussle with fellow once-raced runner Kingsgate Native and while rider Johnny Murtagh made his move down the stands side over two furlongs out, it looked like his rival got his head fractionally in front at one stage before going down by a neck.

Noseda said: 'This filly sadly got an infection a week before Royal Ascot so couldn't run there.

'The Flying Childers (at Doncaster) is probably the only race she can go for so we might be forced to give her a chance over six furlongs.'

Darryll Holland timed his run to the second to bring top weight Championship Point through perfectly to land the Bank Of Scotland Investment Service Stakes by three-quarters of a length.

Lake Poet was out in front deep into the final furlong but was readily passed by the 8-1 shot, another big winner for John Livock following his Third Set in Saturday's totesport International.

There was a totesport Ebor market reshuffle in the Detica Summer Stakes as Scriptwriter (7-1), for McEvoy and Saeed bin Suroor, showed a stunning turn of foot to race away by two and a half lengths.

He is only 8-1 for the York handicap with the sponsors, the trainer adding: 'He is entered in two of the Shergar Cup races at Ascot and also the Ebor.

'When I spoke to Kerrin, he said this horse could go for the Melbourne Cup.'

Fremen (12-1) ridden by Adrian Nicholls for his father David, gunned his rivals down late to take the TurfTV Stakes under a penalty, although Nicholls junior picked up a three-day ban for careless riding in the process.
