Fanning Gets Derby Chance

Joe Fanning will keep the ride on Boscobel in the Budweiser Irish Derby on Sunday.

Frankie Dettori, retained jockey to the colt´s owner Sheikh Mohammed, would have ridden the colt at the Curragh had he not been serving a two-day whip ban.

Fanning gained plenty of plaudits when making all-the-running on the Halling colt in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot on Friday.

It was on the strength of that victory that connections decided to supplement Boscobel for 120,000 euros at the latest acceptance stage.

'Joe Fanning rides Boscobel. He gave him a fabulous ride at Royal Ascot,' said Sheikh Mohammed´s bloodstock advisor John Ferguson.

Boscobel, trained by Mark Johnston, is a best-priced 8-1 for the Irish Classic, in which the Aidan O´Brien-trained Eagle Mountain is the hot favourite.
