Fitzgerald out of hospital after most recent operation

Mick Fitzgerald, badly injured in a fall in the Aintree Grand National in April, has left hospital following a 90-minute operation on his damaged right knee, on Wednesday.

Fitzgerald, who suffered career-threatening injuries to his knee and neck in a second-fence Grand National fall from L´Ami, paid a flying visit to London´s Wellington Hospital, where surgeon Jonathan Lavelle, brother of trainer Emma Lavelle, restored three ripped knee ligaments with grafts from the jockey´s hamstring.

Fitzgerald, who does not plan to make any decision on his future in the saddle until fully recovered, has already undergone two operations on his neck totaling 13 hours.

"Jonathan Lavelle did the operation and he was very, very happy with how it went," said Fitzgerald.

"I felt horrific after my last two operations but I was in a sorrier state then. At only an hour and a half, this was a relatively short operation and I didn´t need to be given as much anesthetic."
