French Guineas entry shows promise

Amiwain shaped promisingly when second on his reappearance in the Prix Djebel at Longchamp today.

Andre Fabre`s charge, one of two Sagitta 2000 Guineas entries in the Listed seven-furlong contest, ran on well but failed by a length and a half to peg back Greengroom on testing ground.

Connections will wait and see how the colt comes out of today`s race before deciding whether Amiwain will cross the Channel for the Newmarket Classic on May 5th.

Criquette Head-Maarek`s Iron Mask, the other 2000 Guineas entry, looked ill at ease on a very heavy track and finished seventh of the eight runners.

Earlier, Mme Head-Maarek`s Sagitta 1000 Guineas entry, Stunning, made a winning start to the season in the Listed Prix Imprudence also over seven furlongs.

Stunning edged out Hope Town by half a length as the first four home all finished close up.

The winning trainer was undecided about a 1000 Guineas challenge for Stunning.
