French Oaks winner Egyptband dies Egyptband, winner of the 2000 French Oaks (the Prix de Diane), has died in Kentucky.The mare, who was retired last autumn, succumbed after suffering from 'complications arising from an attack of colic.'Trained by Criquette Head-Maarek, Egyptband was at her peak at three when she also chased home Sinndar in the Prix de l`Arc de Triomphe-Lucien Barriere. The daughter of Dixieland Band was also placed in the Prix Vermeille that year.Egyptband began her four-year-old campaign promisingly with a second in the Prix Ganay. She went on to win the Grand Prix de Chantilly.The filly was an odds-on failure when third in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and ended her career by running eighth to Sakhee in the Arc de Triomphe.The classic winner, home-bred by the Wertheimer brothers, had been due to be bred to Kingmambo. The mare had been boarding at the Hagyard Farm near Lexington.
