Haatef Heads For Diadem Date

Haatef is to step back in trip to six furlongs when he tackles Sunday's John Guest Diadem Stakes at Ascot.

Owned by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and trained by Kevin Prendergast, the Danzig colt landed a Listed event at Fairyhouse back in July to supplement a triumph gained on his only other attempt at the trip as a juvenile.

Haatef was last seen finishing third in a Group Three contest over a mile, leaving Prendergast of the opinion he will prove more effective at the weekend when less of an emphasis is placed on stamina.

The County Kildare handler said: 'Haatef runs in the Diadem. He's won over six and seven now and we just feel, probably, that this will suit him better than running again over seven or a mile.

'The ground was very, very heavy at Leopardstown last time and he travelled well before he got a bit tired at the business end.'

Haatef has been partnered by Declan McDonogh in all six of his races to date, but looks certain to have a new man in the plate on Sunday.

'We're happy with him but the jockey situation is a bit undecided at the moment,' Prendergast added.

'I know Sheikh Hamdan has another horse in the race (Per Incanto). If he runs, Richard Hills might be claimed for him and my man will be on duty at the Curragh.'
