Heart breaker for O'Brien

Aidan O'Brien's Heart Shaped was just pipped for glory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita last night.

Johnny Murtagh's mount, sent off at 14-1, came from way off the pace to produce a surging run down the stretch. However her gutsy effort wasn't quite enough to overhaul 9-1 shot Maram, who held on to take the spoils under Jose Lezcano.

The 11-4 favourite Laragh cut out a blistering early pace and was still at the head of affairs as they turned for home. By now Maram was in hot pursuit and Murtagh had started a run from way back on Heart Shaped.

Maram, trained by Chad Brown took it up inside the final furlong and looked set to score cosily at one stage. However Heart Shaped really flew in the final strides and only just failed to get up in a photo finish.

O'Brien was understandably thrilled by the performance of the runner-up saying, 'She ran a great race, is a classy filly and I thought Johnny gave her a brilliant ride. She's a lovely prospect to look forward to next year.'

A rueful Murtagh meanwhile reflected, 'I just needed one more stride.'

The Tommy Stack-trained Beyond Our Reach looked ill at ease a long way from home and was never a factor under Frankie Dettori.

Rookie winning trainer Brown said, 'My grandfather passed away on Tuesday so it's pretty special - he would have wanted me to be here. She was in between horses down the back straight but Jose gave her the perfect ride.'
