Jessy springs 20-1 Nell Gwyn shock

Clues for the Sagitta 1000 Guineas were thin on the ground as Lil`s Jessy emerged victorious in the Shadwell Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket today.

The 20-1 shot was pushed clear in the final furlong by Pat Eddery to defeat Zaheemah by three parts of a length in the Group Three contest.

With the winner not even entered in the 1000 Guineas, betting for the first fillies` Classic was hardly changed.

Winning trainer Jeremy Noseda admitted he does not believed Lil`s Jessy is good enough to return to this course for the Guineas.

'If I thought she was good enough for that I would have entered her for the race,' he said.

'But I wouldn`t put her in the same category as Kalypso Katie and Wannabe Grand who were both second for me in Classics.

'It doesn`t look good for the horses behind her but you`ve got to be realistic about these things.'

Eddery added: 'I doubt if you saw the Guineas form there.'

Khulan, the favourite, faded into fourth and has now been removed from the Guineas betting by William Hill.

Trainer John Dunlop said: 'I don`t think she got tired. You have to accept she has stamina limitations which we always feared.'

Primo Valentino returned to form when making every yard of the running in the six-furlong NGK Spark Plugs Abernant Stakes.

Strongly ridden by Richard Quinn the 9-1 chance held on to score by a length and a quarter from Fath.

Primo Valentino had looked set to take high rank among sprinters after winning his last four races as a juvenile in 1999, including the Mill Reef and Middle Park Stakes.

But he failed to add to that tally last term, showing his best form when a length-and-a-half fourth behind Agnes World in the Group One July Cup.

The winner is owned by the 12-strong Primo Donnas Syndicate who at one stage were thinking of selling the colt as a stallion.

Bookmakers Coral Eurobet go 10-1 joint-favourites Primo Valentino and Minardi for the July Cup.

Richard Hughes rode his first winner in his job as retained rider to owner Khalid Abdullah when the odds-on Perfect Sunday landed the opening contest of Newmarket`s Craven meeting today.

Perfect Sunday scored by four lengths at 10-11 in the Grantchester Maiden Stakes from Hyderabad to give trainer Barry Hills a 1-2.

The winner earned a 33-1 quote for the Vodafone Derby from both the Tote and Victor Chandler and Hills indicated that the son of Quest For Fame would be aimed at one of the trials.
