Kinane leans towards Hawk Wing

Michael Kinane is likely to partner Aidan O`Brien`s Hawk Wing over stable mate High Chaparral in the Vodafone Derby on Saturday.

Both colts have dominated the betting on the premier Classic in recent weeks and Hawk Wing is a best-priced 13-8 favourite with the Tote.

High Chaparral, winner of the Racing Post Trophy last year and unbeaten in two starts this term, is generally a 9-4 chance.

The ground remains on the fast side of good at the Surrey track today and that has swayed Kinane in favour of the Sagitta 2000 Guineas runner-up, who looked desperately unlucky not to catch his stable mate Rock Of Gibraltar after racing on the unfavoured stands` side of the track at Newmarket.

'I believe Aidan is going to Epsom on Wednesday to walk the course, so I won`t finally decide until then, but if the ground is fast I will ride Hawk Wing,' Kinane told the Racing Post.

Officials watered the last three furlongs of the famous Downs on Tuesday but no watering will be taking place today, according to clerk of the course Andrew Cooper.

'We had about a millimetre of rain at Epsom first thing this morning but it has brightened up a little bit down here _ a bit better day than we thought was in store,' he said.

'As things stand we are not doing any watering today, which is as much to do with what we think might be around the corner weather wise in the next 48 hours, where it does look potentially quite unsettled.

'There`s no absolute confidence in that in terms of will it fall at Epsom and how much will we get but it does look as though the potential is there for some rain both tomorrow and Thursday.

'So I think in view of that we will hold tight certainly during the bulk of today, we`ll have a look at it this evening and take it from there.

'I walked the course last night and I would call it basically good ground, it`s just on the faster side of good in one or two places but beautiful Flat racing ground.

'The watering we did yesterday has left the course nicely balanced with nice, even ground _ the sort of ground you`d be happy to run the Derby on.'

Kinane will be bidding for his third success in the famous race following Commander In Chief in 1993 and Galileo last year.
