Lyons Rules Out Derby Date

Ger Lyons has ruled out a crack at the Budweiser Irish Derby with his impressive Navan maiden winner Vincenzio Galilei.

Only just beaten by subsequent Ballysax Stakes winner Mores Wells on his debut, he then disappointed at at Gowran behind Mahler.

Vincenzio Galilei was a four-length winner at Navan last time but Lyons will not step him up to top-class company in Sunday's Classic.

'He's a cracking horse but he's not running in the Derby,' said Lyons.

'The horse that beat him on his debut, Mores Wells, has won a Group Three and there are winners coming out all over the place.

'He is only going to improve with time but the reason he got beat next time was because I ran him too quick. He wasn't ready for it on firm ground.

'He put that run well and truly behind him at Navan and that took nothing out of him and it is onwards and upwards but it will be baby steps.

'Whatever he does this year will be a bonus as he will make a cracking four-year-old and I'll be very surprised if he hasn't won a Pattern race by the end of the season.

'He could be out next in England before he is seen in Ireland again.'
