Madame fails in latest record attempt

Madame Jones failed in her latest attempt to break the all-time record for handicap victories in a year when she finished down the field at Southwell today.

David Evans` tough mare was attempting to make it 12 handicap wins, a record currently held by a pair of 19th century handicappers, Misty Morn and Honesty, in the Littlewoods Bet Direct Daily Special Offers Handicap.

But she was never prominent in the one-mile contest and finished well in arrears in a race won in easy fashion by 11-4 favourite First Maite.

On the go since January 9th, the six-year-old was having her 57th career outing but she is not one to rest on her laurels and will be back in action at the Nottinghamshire track tomorrow - although not in handicap company.

She contests the Maguire and Batty Ltd Christmas Party Classified Stakes and a 12th victory of the campaign would see her equal the post-war record for the most wins in a season by a filly or mare.
