McCarron records 7,000th winner

Chris McCarron last night became only the seventh jockey in US racing history to ride 7,000 winners.

He reached the landmark by driving Spinelessjellyfish to a narrow win in the Khaled Stakes at Hollywood Park in California, and promptly celebrated by adding further victories on Cee`s Elegance and Romanceishope.

McCarron, fourth in last year`s Derby at Epsom on Best Of The Bests, emulated Laffit Pincay (9,125 wins), Bill Shoemaker (8,833), Pat Day (7,952), David Gall (7,396), Russell Baze (7,328) and Angel Cordero (7,057).

Paying tribute to the inappropriately-named Spinelessjellyfish, he said: 'This horse is a fighter. It was great to hit this milestone on a horse like him.

'This is an awesome feeling.'

McCarron, 46, has won more prize money than any other US rider, his mounts earning over 250 million dollars since he notched his first victory in 1974.

He has won the Kentucky Derby on Alysheba and Go For Gin and been associated with numerous other good horses, including John Henry, Sunday Silence and Tiznow.
