No watering planned at Cheltenham

Officials at Cheltenham have no plans to water the course ahead of next week`s National Hunt Festival which gets under way on Tuesday, it was announced today.

Clerk of the course Simon Claisse said: 'We`ve left the ground state as it was given last night. That is good to soft, good in places on the `Old` and good to soft, soft in places on the `New`.

'We`ve had a little bit of drizzle and it`s overcast and quite windy.

'I`ve recently spoken to the weatherman John Kettley and he tells me that tonight and up to early afternoon tomorrow we`ll get a third to half an inch of rain and possibly some more on Sunday evening.'

When asked if he was considering watering the course, Claisse added: 'On the basis of that forecast then no we don`t need to think about it. So we will just sit tight.

'The rain will come, they tell me.

'Today is a different day from yesterday in that we had sun and a warm wind yesterday. It`s cooler today and it is cloudy. I`ve just come back off the course and it is still damp.'
