Prescott may have sole representative

Newmarket trainer Sir Mark Prescott could have just one runner in the Tote Cambridgeshire.

Prescott, who has won the race twice in the past with Quinlan Terry in 1988 and with Pasternak nine years later, is responsible for two of the leading fancies for the first leg of the autumn double at Newmarket on October 6th.

They are John Smith`s Cup winner and Tote Ebor runner-up Foreign Affairs, who has been allotted 9st 7lb, and dual-Newmarket scorer Alphaeus (8st 7lb).

Alphaeus has been backed down to 6-1 favourite following the publication of the weights this week, while Foreign Affairs is a best-priced 14-1 shot.

'I haven`t a clue what`s going to run,' Prescott said today.

'Alphaeus has done no work since he ran last. He`s had a holiday for the autumn so it will depend how he goes.

'Foreign Affairs, I would think he`s more likely to go somewhere else.'

Foreign Affairs finished a creditable half-length second to the Aidan O`Brien-trained Mediterranean over 14 furlongsat York.

Prescott added: 'I thought he ran well. He was giving weight away (4lb). If Mr O`Brien`s hadn`t run, everyone would have said he stayed the trip well.

'But he`s done very well.

'The handicapper has given him a good old jack (6lb) for his second and Alphaeus has gone up 10lb for staying in his box.'

Alphaeus has made all to win both his starts this term but those tactics are not essential, as Prescott explained.

He said: 'He`s not at all free. In each race, there wasn`t a front runner so we thought we might as well get on with it.

'He wouldn`t probably be as good as the other two I`ve won it (Cambridgeshire) with but I don`t know.'
