Prize money boost for Cox Plate The Cox Plate, the only Australian race to form part of the World Racing Series, has become the country`s second richest race after the Melbourne Cup.The Moonee Valley Racing Club has announced that the extended mile and a quarter contest is to have its purse boosted to AUS3million this year. This marks a significant rise on the equivalent figure of AUS2.25million last year. The winner, Northerly, netted a first prize of AUS1.1 while this year`s winner will gross AUS2million.The MVRC hopes that the cash injection will further stimulate overseas competition in the race, which was contested by German horse Silvano last October. The MVRC added that it will also be subsidising the costs of horses travelling from overseas for this year`s renewal which will be run on October 26th.
