Soggy Newcastle abandoned

Newcastle have been forced to abandon today`s National Hunt meeting due to a waterlogged track.

No problems were expected for the meeting early on this morning but heavy rain has taken its toll on the course and small areas have become waterlogged.

Track officials were due to hold a third inspection at 12noon to decide whether racing could go ahead as they the course was declared raceable after the first inspection at 10am.

But clerk of the course James Armstrong says conditions have deteriorated and they have been forced to call off the meeting.

He said: 'We`ve had to abandon. It`s just started raining again and we can`t take any more. We`ve got to draw the line somewhere. It`s hopeless I`m afraid.'
