Spencer gets Cheltenham ride

Top-flight Flat jockey Jamie Spencer has landed a ride at the Cheltenham Festival, it was revealed today.

He will partner Pizarro for Edward O`Grady in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper on Wednesday.

Spencer, who enjoyed big-race success for Luca Cumani and Aidan O`Brien on the level last year, is a neighbour of O`Grady`s in Ballynonty, County Tipperary.

'He lives right next door to Eddie. He`s always ridden out for Eddie - he`s a very good friend,' Spencer`s agent Ray Cochrane explained.

'He`s ridden about 10 or 15 winners over hurdles. He`s always wanted to ride at Cheltenham and after Wednesday he can say he`s been round with the boys at a big meeting.'

O`Grady has also finalised the riding arrangements for the rest of his Festival runners.

Adrian Maguire will ride his Sacundai in the Gerrard Supreme Novices` Hurdle, Norman Williamson on Ned Kelly (Smurfit Champion Hurdle), Charlie Swan on Over The Bar (Royal & SunAlliance Novices` Hurdle), Paul Carberry on Back In Front (Weatherbys Champion Bumper), Norman Williamson on Turtleback (JCB Triumph Hurdle) and Philip Fenton on Sheltering (Christie`s Foxhunter Chase).

His Inca Trail has been ruled out of the Bumper as he is just short of peak fitness after suffering a pulled muscle earlier this year.

O`Grady will give his Cheltenham team their final workout on Saturday morning.
