A top-class entry of 46 - up six from last year - has been received for the final Classic of the season, the #500,000 Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday, September 13.
Run over an extended mile and six furlongs, the Ladbrokes St Leger is one of the only major races to have eluded multiple champion trainer Sir Michael Stoute, who has saddled the runner-up five times, and in a bid to finally land the world?s oldest Classic, the Freemason Lodge handler has engaged seven runners in the race.
His contingent is topped by the Ballymacoll Stud home-bred trio of Vodafone Derby runner-up Tartan Bearer (5/1 with Ladbrokes), Group Three Queen?s Vase runaway winner Patkai (4/1 favourite) and unlucky Group Two King Edward VII runner-up Conduit (7/1), whom are all under consideration for the race.
The first-named was promoted to third in last weekend?s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby after suffering interference inside the final furlong, while Conduit could meet his Ascot conqueror, Campanologist (14/1), who is the sole representative from the Maktoum family?s Godolphin operation.
"Tartan Bearer has arrived home but I haven?t spoken to his trainer about how he is. I would imagine that it will take him a while to get over the race - his brother Golan was a bit the same in that he needed plenty of time between races. It will probably be a while before you see Tartan Bearer out."
