Timmy Murphy to ride Best Mate in William Hill Chase.

Jockey Timmy Murphy is to replace the injured Jim Culloty on board Best Mate for the William Hill Chase at Exeter on Friday.

The decision was reached prior to Champion Jockey Tony McCoy dislocating his thumb at Folkestone, with trainer Henrietta Knight and owner Jim Lewis concluding that Murphy´s 'quiet riding style' would suit Best Mate better. Knight mentioned 'I´ve always said the horse liked somebody with a quiet riding style, and I put it in my book. I don´t say that AP´s done badly either to win a King George and finish second in a King George; I still think the horse likes a quiet style.'

She added 'Timmy´s often ridden for us as second to Jim Culloty. He´s ridden Best Mate and we´ver known him a long time.'

Murphy, expressing his delight at the decision, said 'I´m really looking forward to riding him. He´s an absolutely fabulous horse - his record says it all. It´ll be a pleasure to say I´ve ridden the best chasers in England (Best Mate) and Ireland (Beef Or Salmon) in the last two weeks.'
