Tregoning Looks To Il Warrd For Veuve Clicquot Vintage Repeat

> Kingwood House Trio Among 32 Entries For The BGC Stakes

> Asiatic Boy Heads Nine-Strong Group One BGC Sussex Stakes Entry

Marcus Tregoning is hoping Il Warrd can follow the lead of his illustrious stablemate Sir Percy and triumph in the £70,000 Group Two Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes at Goodwood on Wednesday, August 1, day two of Glorious Goodwood.

Sir Percy, winner of the 2006 Vodafone Derby, captured the prestigious seven-furlong Goodwood contest during an unbeaten two-year-old season, which climaxed with victory in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes.

Il Warrd is one of 16 entries for what again promises to be a fantastic renewal of the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes (2.50pm), which has also been won in recent times by the brilliant dual Classic winner Shamardal (2004) and his top-class stablemate Lucky Story (2003), as well as the high-class No Excuse Needed (2000) and champion miler Aljabr (1998).

Il Warrd, a staying-on sixth on his debut at Newbury in May, scored an impressive first victory in the Euro Earthworks Novice Stakes over seven furlongs at Ascot on July 14.

The Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum-owned colt travelled well towards the head of affairs down Ascot's straight before drawing clear for an emphatic three-length victory over Yahrab.

Tregoning revealed today: 'The plan is to run Il Warrd in the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes. He's a very different horse to Sir Percy but I'm pleased with him and he's a nice horse so hopefully he'll be good enough. I think the signs are good.

'For an inexperienced horse, he did it well at Ascot. He'll have learned a lot from that race and he travels well, he has a good cruising speed, he picks up well and he gets the distance extremely well. I think seven furlongs to a mile would be his trip.'

Il Warrd enjoyed the good to firm going at Ascot and his trainer continued: 'I'm not sure how soft a ground he'd go on. That's the only thing I'd have reservations about because although he's by Pivotal, he's out of a Machiavellian mare and his action suggests that he wouldn't want it too soft. A real good one would probably go on any ground but we'll see how this step goes and take it from there.'

The excellent entry for the Group Two Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes also includes the Aidan O'Brien-trained Lizard Island, winner of the Group Two Anheuser-Busch Adventure Parks Railway Stakes over six furlongs at the Curragh on July 1, while the same trainer also has the Listed-placed Minneapolis.

Mark Johnston, successful with Shamardal and Lucky Story could rely on Missioner, while Saeed bin Suroor has entered the impressive Newmarket maiden winner Rio De La Plata and Peter Chapple-Hyam has Group Two Weatherbys Superlative Stakes runner-up Declaration Of War.

BGC Stakes Heritage Handicap

Tregoning has entered a trio of interesting three-year-olds in the same day's lucrative £85,000 BGC Stakes Heritage Handicap (4.05pm) over a mile and a half, in Aajel, Raffaas and Zoom One.

The last-named won twice as a two-year-old, including over a mile at Goodwood, and he returned to the track to finish third over 10 furlongs on his seasonal bow, before disappointing at Salisbury on June 27.

Raffaas has been a revelation in two starts this season, winning the 11-furlong Empire Investments Handicap at Goodwood in June before storming to a six-length triumph over a mile and five furlongs at Lingfield on July 3.

Tregoning reported: 'Zoom One ran well at Goodwood in June but I'm not sure how well handicapped these are. The handicapper has got them fairly well.

'Raffaas has been progressing the right way and I'm pleased with him - he's a nice horse.

'Raffaas is the improver at the moment. He's a much bigger horse than he ever was as a two-year-old. He's done an awful lot of growing and he's got stronger and a good deal better, so he's going the right way at the moment anyway.'

The thrice-raced Aajel made a winning debut over 10 furlongs on Lingfield's Polytrack in February and the strapping grey Aljabr colt stayed on to take third in the M-Real Stakes over 11 furlongs at Goodwood in May.

The Kingwood House Stables handler said: 'I like Aajel, he's a big, strong, galloping horse. He's a different type, he's a galloper and he stays and stays forever. He's a nice horse who has run well at Goodwood once before but he's a huge horse - 17.2hh - and I'm sure his best will come next year.

'Every year I look forward to Goodwood. This season I think my team is not bad. We have a nice bunch of horses, so we'll be very disappointed if we don't get at least one winner but we'll be looking for a bit more than that.'

The ultra-competitive BGC Stakes has attracted a 32-strong entry, headed by the Geoff Wragg-trained Heron Bay, winner of the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot, as well as the Listed-placed Majoune's Song and one-time Derby hope Proponent.

Group One BGC Sussex Stakes

The feature event on day two of Glorious Goodwood is the £300,000 Group One BGC Sussex Stakes (3.30pm), the high-summer championship mile contest, which has attracted nine top-class confirmations.

The awesome South African raider Asiatic Boy, trained by Mike de Kock, is set to have his first start since demolishing the opposition with a nine and a half-length victory in the Group Two UAE Derby on dirt at Nad Al Sheba, Dubai, in March.

The entry also includes Group One St James's Palace Stakes hero Excellent Art, the first two home in the Group One Queen Anne Stakes, the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Ramonti and Jeremy from the Sir Michael Stoute yard, and Dark Islander, winner of the Grade Two Oak Tree Derby at Santa Anita in October for trainer John Hills.

Excellent Art, who will start favourite, is one of three Aidan O'Brien-trained entries along with Group Two winner Archipenko and Trinity College.

Group Three winner Decado represents the Kevin Prendergast yard, while Munaddam could line up for Ed Dunlop, who saddled Court Masterpiece to victory last season.
