Tysou Grabs Chandler Spoils

The decision to salvage the Victor Chandler Chase from last Saturday´s abandoned card at Cheltenham proved a most profitable one for the Brown family as Tysou pipped Dempsey to take the #40,000 contest at Sandown.

Having travelled powerfully throughout, the Tracy Brown-owned Dempsey looked by far the likeliest winner as the field turned into the home straight.

But Mick Fitzgerald brought the Nicky Henderson-trained winner, owned by her husband Bill, with a powerful late lunge that saw him overturn the form of his defeat at the hands of Dempsey on their previous appearances.

The top weight ran a game race under his welter burden of 11st 12lb, but after pulling hard early and then duelling with Hoo La Baloo for the lead throughout, he could not fend off the winner who prevailed by two lengths.

Hoo La Baloo went off the well-backed 5-2 favourite, but his jumping let him down in his first try outside novice company. Kalca Mome (25-1) ran on to deny Bambi de l´Orme for third, a further three lengths back.

Fitzgerald said: 'I´m not getting carried away because they went fast in front and that played into our hands, but he really does seem to be a different horse this season.

'I have doubted him a bit in the past, but he has grown up and he gave me his everything.

'He made a bad mistake at the ditch but got back into it straight away and jumped the last well just when we needed it.'

Trainer Mark Pitman said of the runner-up: 'He is at the top of his game at the moment and I thought we had it won.

'But if you are going lose to any horse, it might as well be the one owned by your owner´s husband!'

Dempsey was eased from 33-1 to 40-1 for the Champion Chase by Coral, but cut to 25-1 from the same price by VC Bet.
