Sadness at death of Little King Robin

Little King Robin, who gained many fans during a lucrative racing career, died last week after producing her third foal.

Owned by Maria and Harry Kavanagh, the eleven-year-old won nine times, including a point-to-point, when trained by Colin Bowe, retiring from racing in April of 2015.

The daughter of King's Theatre lowered the colours of Arctic Fire, Wicklow Brave and Tiger Roll when successful in the Grade 2 WKD Hurdle at Down Royal, while she ran with great credit when third in the Morgiana and Hatton's Grace.

The front-running tactics adopted by the diminutive bay saw her amass a host of admirers.

"She haemorrhaged after foaling and nothing could be done," Harry Kavanagh, who is based near Arklow, Co Wicklow, revealed.

"She was the last mare to foal this year. We are after having eleven foals and everything was going fairly well.

"It's a disaster really because we'd have a good few mares but Little King Robin was one we'd be really looking forward to breeding from.

"She was only eleven and you'd breed from them until they are twenty. We'd like to think we would have had another half dozen foals from her. She mightn't have went in foal every year.

"She was a right one and it'll be hard to get one like her. She was only 15.3hh. She was unbelievable. It's been a tough week but we have to move on.

"She had a cracking Mount Nelson colt last week and he is on a foster mare now. She has just about taken to him.

"It was difficult for her to take to him. We had to take her foal off because he was big enough to be weaned and it has taken a bit of time.

"Little King Robin also has a three-year-old Shirocco filly in Colin Bowe's. We have her broken and riding.

"She is too small to go 'pointing'. She is working away in Bowe's and I had her broken earlier in the year. We gave her a break then and brought her back to Bowe's. She is only there two weeks now and will do at least another month there before she has another break.

"Hopefully we will have a summer campaign for her next year as a four-year-old. We might start her in something like Quevega's daughter (Princess Vega) began in. We'll see how she pans out. She has to grow as she is 15.2 at the moment.

"Little King Robin also had a Walk In The Park colt and we sold him at Goffs last December for E29,000.

"The new foal will probably go to the sales as well."
