The Last Indian swooped from last to first to land the spoils in the first division of the Gormanlough Handicap at Navan. Harvey Specter led before halfway and stretched the field turning for home. Musical Jewel claimed him two furlongs out but Pat Smullen conjured a terrific late charge from The Last Indian.

Aidan Howard 's charge grabbed the lead inside the final 100 yards and went on to record a comprehensive three-and-three-quarter length win. Sixtyfiveroses stayed on for second as Musical Jewel was swamped and had to settle for fourth.

The well-backed winner (7/1 this morning into 3/1 favourite) was following up her success at Tipperary last month.

“She was drawn on the outer and we decided to take our time and he gave her a great ride. I was a bit worried turning in but she has a great turn of foot,” said Howard.

“She is very honest and could go to Listowel for a mile handicap. Hopefully the handicapper isn’t too hard on her.

“I was half afraid that she might not stay the mile and a quarter as it was a big step up. They went very fast and it’s the most testing track in the country.

“The lads in the yard have done a great job keeping her sweet.”
