Davy Russell notched a quick double at Limerick when Lackaneen Leader ran out a game winner of the Grade 3 Shannon Spray Mares Novice Hurdle.

The progressive six-year-old came into the two-mile six contest having won a maiden hurdle and a handicap on her last two starts.

Gordon Elliott 's charge proved more than able for the step up in class today and was delivered to challenge two from home by Russell. Moyhenna proved a tough nut to crack but gave way on the run-in and Lackaneen Leader went on for a length-and-a-quarter success at odds of 4/1.

"She is honest but I was worried about the ground. Davy gave her a great ride as we said we'd keep her out wide and not to get crowded and she jumped great,” said Elliott.

"Whatever she does this year is only a bonus as she has the size to jump a fence. She's a nice mare and got her black-type so we're delighted.

"I'm not sure where we go next, Fairyhouse or Punchestown but this was the plan."
