Formscan By Tom Weekes - JOES TURN is a veteran chaser who reverts to hurdling but has recent winning form and can cope better with softening ground conditions than some of his rivals. Successful over hurdles last year, the selection won over fences at Killarney earlier this month and competes from a winnable hurdles’ rating today. Mikey Cohen stays well and has useful recent form but softening ground would be a concern. Dual course-and-distance Ilbedare has recent form but would also prefer good ground, along with Strong Contender, who is progressive.

It is great to win primarily because of the owners involved and they have been very patient with the horse and with me, as we had been disappointed with how he had done over hurdles up until now. He is my first horse for them and I told them he was a nice horse, so they were very good to trust me. You can see he is not a natural hurdler and jumps a lot better over a chase fence, so that's where he'll be going next, I'd say. . I had been disappointed with him since his bumper win but there is still a nice horse in him and he has much better use of himself over a chase fence. Today's distance (2m4f) is his minimum and he will come into his own over three miles-plus.

He likes it here, he won over the same distance at the May meeting last year, and was unlucky not to win here in October when he made a mistake at the last. For a Flat-bred horse, he stays very well. He had to come wide into the straight for the final time, but doesn't like being around horses anyway. There's no forcing him, you have to let him find his feet and wait on him to go. He needs a bit of time between races, so he'll get a little break and probably come here next month or in August. Easy side of good is fine for him, but he wouldn't like it any slower.

I'm delighted with her because we ran her back a little bit quick after Wexford, and the ground turned out to be a bit softer than ideal. She's only a slight mare, 15 '3, and the better ground at Wexford was more to her liking. It was a messy race, and she got squeezed on the home turn, but toughed it out well. She was well bought by Michael Hogan (owner) because she's by a good sire and is a half-sister to a Grade 1-placed horse. We'll give her three weeks now and find something else - we'll keep her to the country tracks for now.

He has a great bunch of owners. It’s a partnership that I put together between a few guys I know and met. It’s their first winner as a partnership. I thought he’d run well in Clonmel, but I’d say he got away with murder at home over Christmas. He races a bit lazy and we figured that out in Clonmel the last day and changed his training regime a little bit. I think it’s made a big difference. Tiernan is a free 5lb and it’s great to have him on side. I hope he feels the same and it’s good to be part of our team. The team of staff that I have at home at the moment are second to none, I have the most amazing bunch of people around me and I’m very fortunate. Tiernan is fortunate to have them around him too, and him and I are in a good place. The horses have been running very consistently for four years. We mightn’t have a good horse, but the horses are running very consistently. We are trying to build and find a better type of horse and get our level of quality up a little bit. It’s a slow burner and hard work, but I feel that we are getting there.

He didn't get to run much this year as he was balloted out on occasions and, also, his wind isn't great, so we pick and choose where to run. He is a heavy-ground horse but his wind doesn't carry him on it, so we duck and dive looking for reasonable going. He likes a flat track, he jumps and stays all day. Donagh gave him a great ride. I've lost two races through enquiries already this year, so hopefully this won't be the third!
