Formscan By Shane Redmond - SET THE TONE (13) has found some form over hurdles of late and might just be a player. She built on her runner-up finish at Limerick to win well at Wexford late last month, and while she couldn’t follow that up at the same track a week ago when favourite, it is interesting that she turns out again so quickly. Thewaybackhome has his first run over fences here on the back of some improved efforts over hurdles and the same can be said about Mercurial Sea who was second to a strong favourite in a maiden hurdle at Downpatrick last time. Menas Miracle beat the veteran Fr Gilligansvoyage to win over a trip close to this here at the end of May and both might be considered once again.

He'll not be in that 0-100 much longer. Blinkers and that trip, dropped him out and took his time again - that seems to be the key. Alex gets on well with him, you couldn't take him off. He was always going well at home. We took him to England last year and backed him a couple of times and he was very disappointing. It was probably our fault as we rode him too handy. He's a very, very good work horse at home. He loves to be dropped out and passing horses. Probably big, flat, galloping tracks don't suit this horse because he is a wee bit quirky in himself. Up and down hills, twisting and turning, keeps him thinking. Tramore, here and Sligo - those sort of tight tracks. I think he saves a good wee bit for himself. I thought today the Shark's horse (Hanlon, Mother Ship) was 19lb better off with us and I was afraid of her, but he did it well. That horse got cut off at the top of the hill and you need a bit of luck in races, we got it. I'd rather give him three to four weeks (off).

There was loads to like about it considering we were hoping he would do something like that in Limerick the other day (seventh on Thursday). He never seemed to raise a gallop in Limerick the other day. Bit of both (better ground and tactics), I'd say. Kieren said he hit the one well-watered patch in Limerick and he just came back underneath him and stopped jumping. We were scratching our heads, brought him home and rode him out yesterday myself, and he was bucking and squealing. Threw him out in the field this morning and he galloped around the place. We are a mile down the road, so we had to come and take our chance. Kieren said what was I thinking and I said pop him out. If something goes (on), they go, but make up his mind. We know he jumps well, so let him see his hurdles and attack them. It worked out well. It is our back garden, so it is great. It is my first winner here as a trainer, I had plenty of luck here as a rider. No plans really. I had Limerick in mind for a while, waiting for it. Thought we had him fairly right to run well and he was very disappointing. This was an extra race put on and I put him in. We'll see what the handicapper does.

We gave him a couple of runs and he was a bit novicey, and this, that and the other. We thought he’d run a bit better in handicaps up to now, and I was disappointed with him the last day, but in fairness to Denis (O’Regan), he gave him a grand ride and learned in Tramore. We were wondering if we would stop or if we would keep going, and that’s why we were surprised about the money coming for him. He has worked well in the past and, in fairness, he was always going to be a stronger horse next year. We’re lucky with the way the race panned out and he’s owned by a pure gent in Jim Reaney, who also bred him. He’s a very loyal owner and is one of these lads who takes the bad news with the good news.

last year, I left here deflated when getting out of jail with just one big-priced winner (250/1) and while loads ran ok, it is a funny game as the only currency is winners. At the back end of last year we didn’t have the string of horses we wanted and it was one-thing-after-another which was going wrong. We worked hard at getting quality young horses though and got back rolling in the spring, after going nine months without a win. A month ago, I said we had savage depth with some lovely handicappers, maiden horses and unraced ones and it was the best team we ever had. I dreamed of having six winners but would have settled for three, so this is phenomenal.

In fairness to Philip Enright (jockey) after his last run he said to get it done so credit to him and it made the difference. He had previously shown snippets of form and his work at home had been good, but had been disappointing on the track. That was grand, they went a good gallop and I was just hunting away the whole way. I was able to find my way through them and then had something (Hatfield Hammer) to aim at.
