Wisdom holds on under Murtagh

Wed 25th Nov 2009, 18:48

Johnny Murtagh pulled further clear in the jockeys championship when getting Wit And Wisdom home in the six-furlong maiden at Dundalk.

The Ger Lyons-trained gelding was prominent throughout and hit the lead early in the straight.

He was strongly pressed inside the final furlong, however, and just held on to score by a short-head from Miss Velocity

"It's never over until the end," said Murtagh, who now leads by seven. "That winner will help. Obviously I'm here tonight and tomorrow but I'm suspended on Friday."

"Ger has been a big help to me in my drive for the championship."

The winner could now be sold aboard and trainers brother Shane Lyons said: -

"He did it well and has progressed well from his first and second starts.

"I'm delighted that he's broke his duck for a bunch of good owners. They've had a few horses with us.

"This horse has attracted a lot of interest from aboard, in Hong Kong and America. He'll probably be running there next year.

"He's done his job for a bunch of loyal owners and we're happy with that."

There was a sting in the tail for Murtagh who received a two-day ban for the whip.

The Stewards gave him one day for excessive frequency and one day for improper use.

Keagan Latham also received a one-day ban for excessive frequency on the runner-up.
