Aspen holds on in finale
Aspen Belle just held on in an exciting finish to the concluding seven furlong handicap at Cork this afternoon. Sat 15th Apr
I felt going to Tipperary she was a little short (of work) so the gallop down the back straight didn't do her any harm!. She is highly strung and is difficult and only that my son Jack gets on so well with her that we wouldn't have got as far as we have. She obviously loves this place and we have her in at Sligo on Tuesday. It is a 0-70 fillies handicap and it is not ideal that she will be running with 10st on her back but I'd imagine the reaction she'll get from the handicapper will force out hands to run her. It was probably as safe ground as we could get away with and ideally we wanted the heavens to open tonight but it was lovely and safe and Killian said that was as good as she has ever been.
Patrick Martin
The reason we came here is because Dundalk wouldn't be an option for her. This was the only game in town. Leigh always thought six was a bit short for her, so we said we'd take our time and drop her in. She's very hard on herself and lives on her nerves a bit. He gave her a lovely ride. They went very hard which played into her hands, and she loves a cut in the ground. It's a nice surprise when they do that. We might keep her in training next year. Tom (Brennan, owner) is in two minds but when things go right for her she's a right tool.
Patrick Martin
She got a lovely soft lead, and settled better than she had been settling. They probably let her get away a bit. She's tough and honest, and tries very hard. She's won two now this year, and hopefully the handicapper will not be too hard on her.
Patrick Martin
I was expecting her to be in the first six and was definitely expecting my other horse (fourth placed No Way Jack) to also be in the first six,. Seven furlongs is as far as she wants and she needs an ease - that's why we skipped Dundalk with her. She is a bit of a fuss-pot and we won't run her back quickly - I'm delighted for my father-in-law (Tom Brennan, owner) as he has plenty of the family.
Patrick Martin
