I've just had a quick call with Kia on the phone, and he is over the moon. He says he can't believe his first jumps runner is a winner. I said, 'we will start as we mean to go on!'. It is great. We have only had him a few weeks and, to be fair, all we have done is just school him and he loves it. He enjoys his jumping. It was a big ask for him to change stables, and change codes as well, and get his head in front so quickly. He's a lovely, tough horse and he has probably been having a hard enough time of it in the high grades on the Flat. I would imagine getting his head in front won't do him any harm. It is great to start off on the right note. I only just have him, but I'd be fairly sure the plan will be to stay over hurdles and get a good novice hurdle season out of him. Next summer, he is a horse that will definitely be more than capable of switching codes. He has won his maiden, so he's only got the novice bracket for this season. I'd say we will try and get as much as we can out of that. We have no time set in stone (over new premises) so, for the time being, we will concentrate on what we have got in Closutton first and I'm sure when the times comes, we will hopefully consolidate everything up there.

it was a big step up in grade from his Ballinrobe win although he had less weight in this race so I decided to roll the dice. Niall is one of the most underestimated riders in Ireland and carried out every instruction to a tee. He is fierce value for his 5lb claim and everything worked out well. I tried to sell this horse last July but it was an advantage to me that he wasn’t sold. He is a progressive horse and is still improving. I am a Limerick-man (Kilfinane) but have recently moved to a new yard a mile down the road, into Cork, which is just a mile from my previous base. This is a nice mare. I’d say she’s way better than the ordinary and she’s a winter-type mare. She’s out of a very good mare. This one is the real deal. It was only her third run over hurdles, although you could say it was her second (badly hampered and unseated early at Ballinrobe). I was forced to go for a bumper as she got an RPR of 120 after being second. Just pure greenness beat her in Kilbeggan, or she would have won that novice hurdle. I said to JJ that he was on way the best horse in the race and he said he’d make the running then and do it the hard way. He said it was easier than it looked. She’ll go to Cork next. There is a three-mile novice there and also a three-mile graded race.
