I expected him to run really well as his homework had been very good. I thought he was a proper horse,. I bought him in Doncaster off Sam Curling for three grand, Dominic was looking for a horse. I couldn't find what was wrong with him and obviously there is nothing wrong with him. He was maybe a bit sick when he ran in his point-to-points or something. He's from the family of Epatante and is by Doctor Dino so I wouldn't say he stays three miles. He jumped really well and it was a good performance. I was just saying to Keith there that we couldn’t win a maiden hurdle with him, but he’s taken to this better. He jumps really well and got through that ground well. He won his bumper and looked like he was going to be very smart, but he just lost his way a little bit in the middle part of his career. Hopefully, we’re back on track. The handicapper will have a bit of a say with that. He doesn’t qualify for some of the bigger handicaps yet, with only two runs, so I’m not really sure where we go now. This was the only race for him and it’s very hard to place those horses.

It’s brilliant to win it, and brilliant to have the second and third as well. He was a very cheap purchase as a store, and he has kept improving. He has plenty of size and scope and there is no reason that he won’t keep improving. Keith was a little bit annoyed with himself that he came wide on him in Leopardstown at Christmas, and he wasn’t beaten far. He came out of it well, he’s tough and hardy. Conor is great value for the claim and that was a big help. It’s nearly like a free 5lb. You have to feel sorry for Path D’oroux. He’s threatened to win a big one and has missed again, but he ran really well. Unfortunately, he’ll probably go up another couple of pounds for that and it’ll leave it tougher for him but that’s the nature of it. Midnight It Is ran a cracker as well. He's a huge horse. I'm not sure where he goes now, the race at Thurles (Grade 3 Pierce Molony Memorial Novice Chase) would be an option and is probably more than likely where he'll go. He took some pearlers of falls last season and 'Puppy' (Robbie Power) did a great job with him, he went up to his for a while. The girls in the yard also did a lot of ground work at home with him. It's an unbelievable family and there are still two young ones running around. It was hard to work out Mullins' horses today as they ran so bad the last day. I thought if they mightn't be on song we might have a squeak. I know we had a bit to find on ratings but a graded race is a graded race and it was a nice pot.

That was lovely. We had actually planned to go chasing with him. We were looking for one of those 110 or less beginners but there were none coming up for a while. He was in good form, I love running horses when they are in good form, and I said to the lads we’d go and try and win another hurdle in the meantime. Hopefully, it won’t put him out of them (beginners' chases) but we’re delighted. He gets two-and-a-half (miles), but a good strong pace at two (miles) definitely suits well as well. He was dropping back in class as well which made a big difference. I thought the Bellewstown race the last day was probably a bit too much anyway, a bit above him. He wants good ground and I was happy the rain didn’t come that they were giving originally. As long as he stays in good form, and the ground is reasonable, we’ll keep running.

He is back to himself now, though, and will go for a Listed chase at Gowran next month, in which he finished second in 2024. He'll take beating in that race as he loves the heavy ground, but he also goes on good ground. He is a huge horse. His dam is a half-sister to Commanche Court and I love those Kalanisis.
