We’ve thought the world of this horse from the day he won the bumper in Fairyhouse, he was second in the Grade 1 at Punchestown,. He’s had a few wee problems and it’s kept him off the track for a long time. When we started this season he had only run eight times. He had a great run back, at Cork, at Christmas when Sam (Ewing) rode him. It was a really good run for such a long lay-off. We went to Haydock, picked out a nice race, and we fancied him that day to go well. For whatever reason it didn’t happen and we gave him a good break and had this race in mind. Thankfully it’s worked out. In Haydock he was jumping left and was never happy. Yet he was in great form going there and we were really confident. Haydock can be a funny track, it dries out quick and it can ride sharp enough. I wonder whether he just found it sharp. He never got off on the right footing in the race whereas today JJ had him in a lovely position and he jumped well. The further he went the better he was jumping and he stayed really well.

I think the shorter trip was a benefit and he jumped better than he did in Naas. The ground might not be riding as heavy as people anticipated when I see (stablemate) Captain Cody being tapped for toe and that fella going easily at the second last. That was lovely. He had a good run the last day in Navan on ground that I didn’t think he’d handle. We were expecting him to improve off the back of that,. He won a maiden hurdle last year, I thought it maybe wasn’t the strongest race and maybe he was lucky to win it but I always thought he’d stay that three or three-and-a-half miles and he did. A special thank-you to Aidan Kelly as he did a lot of schooling with him during the winter. Unfortunately he couldn’t ride him the last couple of times but he got a very good ride from Donagh. He jumped very well, Donagh said down the back he just kept jumping himself into it. He stayed all the way to the line and I’m delighted with him. Today was kind of the plan. When Aidan got off him after riding him at Fairyhouse, in a beginners chase, he said he’d be ideal for this race. He was always going to come here. That’s his second run in a handicap and hopefully he can keep progressing. He’s going to get a hike for that so we’ll see where we got after that.
